Good Agricultural Practice (GAP)

Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) refer to recommended management practices for crop production from the primary activity to transportation and packaging, which tend to ensure the safety and achieve a certain quality of product.
Its importance lies in the implementation of GAP not only ensures that food is fit for human consumption but allows access to different markets that include legislation. The producer applying BPA can place their products in foreign markets increasingly demanding and competitive as well as to differentiate the product in the domestic market.
For example, the citrus or apple production destined for the European Union, the implementation of the BPA is limiting market access. Also, in our country and there is legislation that paves the way towards implementing mandatory.
Moreover, implementing a quality system as BPA production increases some costs but reduces the costs of non-quality resulting in a measurable benefit.
The BPA have as main objectives:
· ensure food safety.
· Get quality products according to consumer demand.
· produce so as to protect the environment and prevent its degradation.
· ensure welfare work.
The benefits associated with the implementation of these practices include:
· The protection of human health as along the production system minimizes the chances that the product is in contact with sources of pollution.
· is provided access to new market demands for quality systems which is required to observe certain rules.
· rejections are reduced and waste (costs of non-quality) goods to establish a tracking system that helps identify and know the location of products throughout the production system.
· also provides a means of differentiating itself.
Regarding the competencies of the BPA is necessary to consider any areas that were clarified in the regulations. Argentina's legislation, following the guidelines of the Argentine Food Code sets out requirements related to training and documentation production process in its entirety.
also includes environmental health factors which develops production associated to soil and water, and management practices that may introduce contaminants such as plant material used, the manipulation of plant, facilities, personnel, harvesting equipment, transport and storage.
The issue of mandatory in compliance with the BPA is directly related to the consumer market for fruit and vegetable products. If the production is for local consumption in Argentina, the BPA can be used as a reference to improve production efficiency and product quality as the legislation still imposes it as an obligation. But the National Food Commission (CONAL) has decided to approve the recommendation set as mandatory term of 5 years.
In the case of allocating production to export to the United States are not GAP binding, although there is a recommendation to apply.
However, if the destination is Europe, many customers require compliance and certification of EUREPGAP standards, making them mandatory for participation in that market. The case of ChileGAP is similar to the latter being also connected to the image of the country.
Whatever the case, for the BPA to be recognized abroad should be similar to the corresponding destination country and, in general, be approved or certified. For this purpose, we use certification bodies must meet these requirements so that the producers can access the external market.
